Peace & Justice Meeting

1. John Baird reported that he had participated in a CIOP (Central IL Organizing Project) demonstration in Springfield earlier in the day at Advance America Pay Day Loans. The demonstration was covered by the media. He also mentioned that there is legislation going through the State legislature further restricting their usury. CIOP is having a regional meeting on Pay Day Lending on May 19, 9:00 a.m. at St. Peters AME Church. We need to get as many people there as possible.
John also mentioned that First Presbyterian Church and Grace United Methodist Church are likely to join CIOP.
2. Problems facing our public educational system were discussed. We decided to focus on the funding of public education as that seems to be a common factor in the other problems. After some discussion we decided that we would contact several people who were familiar with education funding to inquire whom we should ask to address these issues.
3. May 2 is education legislative day in Springfield.
4. May 6 is our next film, Romero, at First Presbyterian Church.
5. Robert mentioned that the Latino Coalition for Prevention had met at Central and that we would have more opportunities to support them.
6. Or next meeting will be 6:30 p.m. on Wed. May 16, 2007.
